Kinkell: The Reconstruction of a Scottish Castle – Kinkell is a step by step account of how, in the space of one year, with no previous building experience and helped only by a few local workmen, Gerald Laing rescued the castle from complete dereliction and restored it to its former glory, for which he received a Civic Trust Award. What emerges, also, is a fascinating account of the dress, diet, domestic routine, family intrigues and lawlessness of sixteenth-century Highland life, which made a building like Kinkell perfectly functional in its day.
